You start a sentence in Spanish… and you stop. You look for the word in French, translate it, rephrase it. Result: you speak slowly, lose your train of thought, and the conversation fizzles out before it even gets started.
Good news: this translation reflex is not inevitable. It's a habit and like any habit, it can be replaced.
Why does your brain translate?

When you learn a language, your brain first uses your native language as an intermediary. This is normal at the beginning. The problem is that many learners remain stuck at this stage, even after years of practice.
The reason? They continue to study Spanish rather than living in Spanish. They memorize vocabulary lists, do grammar exercises, but never expose themselves to the language in a natural and spontaneous context.
The key: think directly in Spanish

Thinking in Spanish does not mean being bilingual. It means creating direct connections between a word and its meaning, without going through French.
Here is how to do it concretely:
1. Associate words with images, not translations
When you learn the word manzana, do not think "apple". Visualize a red apple. Your brain will directly associate the sound with the concept, without going through French.
2. Speak out loud, even alone
Describe what you are doing in Spanish during your daily activities. Are you doing the dishes? Estoy lavando los platos. Are you making coffee? Voy a hacer un café. This inner monologue trains your brain to produce without translating.
3. Practice with native speakers
Nothing replaces real conversation. When you speak with a native, you don't have time to translate and that's exactly what you need! The friendly pressure of an authentic exchange forces your brain to draw directly from its Spanish resources.
4. Consume content in Spanish without French subtitles
Series, podcasts, YouTube videos: expose yourself to raw Spanish. At first, you won't understand everything and that's normal! Your brain learns to guess the meaning from context, exactly as you did with French when you were a child.
5. Join regular oral practice sessions

Consistency is everything. One hour of conversation per week is better than ten hours of passive review. And if you are looking for a structured framework to get serious about it, Las Charlas are made for you.
Las Charlas is the group oral practice session program that I organize at the Turon school. Each session immerses you in an authentic conversation in Spanish, with other motivated learners and a bilingual facilitator. No lectures, no grammar to memorize: just real practice, in a supportive environment where you can let go of translation.
The real turning point: accept imperfection

Mental translation is often a control mechanism. We want to be sure of saying the right thing before speaking. But this quest for perfection is the enemy of fluency.
Fluent speakers make mistakes. Native speakers make mistakes. What distinguishes them is that they keep speaking despite everything.
Allow yourself to stumble. Allow yourself to search for your words. It is in this discomfort that true progress is hidden.
